French bluetooth accessory specialist Com One announced that its Linux-based Phoenix WiFi Radio has upgraded firmware and is being widely distributed. The Internet-enabled clock-radio is now being sold by online retailers such as: Tigerdirect.com, Mobileplanet.com, and Buy.com, says Com One.

Nothing gets the rumour mill turning quite like an upcoming Apple event, so ahead of the 5 September launch, let's take a look at the speculation so far. One of the most interesting rumours brings digital radio to the iPod range, with a 'buy-now' facility offering users the chance to purchase the track they're listening to on their desktop PC from iTunes.

D-Link has developed a nifty device that allows you to play high-definition media from your computer to your HDTV. The catch is, the device makes use of your home router, eliminating the use of cables and wires. The device, known as the D-Link Xtreme N Duo MediaBridge, makes use of a draft 802.11n, operating at 5GHz. The draft 802.11n data transfer rate, combined with frequencies in the 5GHz range, makes it possible to stream high-definition media content from your PC throughout your home with minimal interference.

Linksys today announced the immediate availability of a new member of its Wireless-N Family - Linksys Wireless-N Home Router (WRT150N), which presents three devices in one box. The WRT150N is a Wireless-N (draft 802.11n) access point, a 4-port full-duplex 10/100 switch and a router which ties it all together and lets users’ whole network share a high-speed cable or DSL Internet connection.

Fabless network processor vendor Cavium has teamed up with WiFi software specialist Arada on a Linux-based 802.11n WiFi networking reference design claimed capable of 300Mbps throughputs. The design uses Atheros's "XSPAN" technology, and targets both enterprise and in-home applications, including video streaming and triple-play gateways.

Not only does Research in Motion have a new BlackBerry coming down the production chute, they have the evaluation unit out and it's got built-in WiFi. Ladies and gentlemen, may I present to you the BlackBerry 8300, also known in some circles as the "Daytona".

Shimon Systems' Bio-Netguard a, featured product at the prestigious DEMO emerging technology product showcase and winner of an INNY award from The Tech Museum in Silicon Valley, the Bio-NetGuard uses biometric fingerprint verification technology to authenticate the user. Incumbent technologies authenticate the equipment accessing the WiFi network and do not verify user identity like Bio-NetGuard.

Note: After browsing LinuxDevices.com I came across an announcement about new mini-PCI card for linux that boast a huge radio (600mw) transmitter. Just to put it into perspective the old school Orinoco cards before that tuned down the wattage were 100mw and we did some 15km range tests without any issue.
"Ubiquiti Networks is shipping what are claimed to be the first-ever mini-PCI-based WiFi radios to boast 600mW transmit power, and the first to support operating temperatures from -45 to 95 degrees Celsius. The ExtremeRange WiFi modules have both been tested extensively under Linux, the company says."
