The Associated Press reports that retired Cisco Systems Inc. chairman John Morgridge and his wife have given $175 million to help Wisconsin students pay for their college education at any public university in the state.Morgridge is generous with his time as well. He gave me several interviews for my book, The Technology Leaders, explaining the logic behind Cisco's very successful acquisition strategy.

Cisco Views Video as Future Internet Killer App - Welcome to Yesterday

Note:  I really enjoy these headlines, by my count video has been the killer app since 2005 *cough YouTube *cough.  I thought Cisco would of gotten the memo first being that there enterprise level customer must be asking for more features in there switches to help with the bandwidth intensive video traffic.   Anyways glad to see they are onboard :)

Cisco Systems believes video is the killer app for the next generation of Internet. But that will likely not impact the enterprise for another five to seven years.  Cisco at its C-Scape conference in San Jose beat the collaboration drum in laying out its strategy and vision for the future of networking, with video playing a key part of collaboration.

Cisco has boosted its stock buyback effort by $10 billion, a sign the Internet networking supplier still believes its shares are undervalued. The move, announced Friday, is a way for the San Jose-based company to increase the value of remaining investors' stakes, counter the effect of employees exercising stock options and protect its financial image.

Should Cisco Kill the Linksys Brand?

Note:  Om has a nice write-up about the possibility of discontinuing the Linksys brand just as AT&T has absorbed Cingular into "The New AT&T".  I use this term loosely of course.  I think overall it would be better to have their product line under one name as long as the Cisco Quality goes along with the entire line.  I have purchased some Linksys networking gear lately and I have had hardware issues on simple pieces of gear that you would think would work right out of the box.

"Cisco Systems, apparently is facing a dilemma: whether to lose to the Linksys brand name or not? Cisco bought Linksys a couple of years ago for $500 million, and it has been a good addition to the portfolio, expanding Cisco’s reach into consumer, SOHO and small and medium sized business markets. (Read: Cisco’s born again consumerism.)"

Student Suspended for Breaking Cisco's NAC

Note: Sounds like a very simple and elegant hack.  Too bad he got suspended and was told he was being unpatriotic.

A University of Portland student was suspended for writing a program to bypass the Cisco Clean Access NAC system on campus. Apparently this incredibly dangerous activity is a Patriot Act violation. Or, at least, it is if you believe the letters being sent out by the administration at UP who seem to be confusing "skipping security checks" and "hack into a licensed product"

Cisco Allows Apple Use iPhone Name

Cisco Systems and Apple Computer have finally called a truce, and will share the 'iPhone' name in exchange for exploring 'interoperability' between the companies' products in areas such as security, consumer, and business communication. Both Apple and Cisco have said they will dismiss any pending legal actions regarding the 'iPhone' trademark, but continue to remain tight-lipped about future products that might come out of the 'interoperability' deal.

Cisco and other firms profiting from online-video craze

Note:  I would tend to agree with this.  Portable video content is hot right now.  We are finally seeing the wireless broadband coming from all the major cell phone carriers.  People now want all types of content on these little devices.  Here is an article about how Cisco is trying to capitalize on it:

"So far, when it comes to making money, the online video explosion is mostly about potential. Studios selling TV shows and movies for download, and Web sites like YouTube that link ads to user-generated content, stand to reap billions from the Internet's hottest trend."

Jabber Teams with Cisco For Collaborative Messaging

Note:  I like the Jabber client.  I have used it internally and on a couple Asterisk installations.  Very solid IM client.

Cisco approaches WiMAX with caution

Note:  Well I guess Craig McCaw will have to more time to make his case for Wimax

Cisco Systems Inc. is taking a wait and see approach to WiMAX technology while continuing to market to what it sees as a largely untapped small to mid-sized business market. Charlie Giancarlo, Cisco's chief development officer, said his company is not planning on entering the radio market any time soon. “We've been sitting on the sideline for a number of reasons,” he said during a press conference Wednesday at CScape, Cisco's annual analyst conference.
