Mark Spencer Recounts the History of Asterisk PBX

Asterisk is an open source private branch exchange (PBX) originally created by Mark Spencer of Digium. A PBX, is a type of phone switch, that allows multiple attached telephones to make calls to one another, and to connect to other telephone services including the public switched telephone network (PSTN). Not totally unlike routers that connect multiple computers to a network.

2008 Asterisk/Digium Predictions

Craig Lawrence posted his predictions for Asterisk and Mark Spencer in 2008:

I must admit my predictions for 2007 were not all that accurate. I didn’t predict that Digium would buy Switchvox or that the guys would do a deal with 3Com.  I did manage to predict that asterisk appliances would proliferate and that some high profile services would consolidate – but you don’t need to be related to Nostradamus to have picked those.

My 2008 guesses are looking equally as inaccurate as 2007 – they include:

-          Another successful year for Digium which could see a further Venture Capital injection and announcement that NASDAQ is within their sights
-          A high profile senior engineer from Cisco / Nortel / Avaya joins Digium adding market credibility
-          Mark Spencer puts a deposit on a Malibu house and draws up plans to build a Bill Gates style mansion
-          Trixbox releases a real appliance
-          3Com sells their 1,000th Digium Appliance
-          Dean Collins produces a BLOG that rivals Geoff Pulver’s and releases his top 100 VoIP prospects list on www.100collins.com

So what do you folks think we’ll see in 2008?

Cheers

Mark Spencer: "Consider open source VoIP, think twice about Hybrid-Hosted"

Companies selecting a VoIP solution must choose from a dizzying array of options, including whether a hosted, hybrid-hosted or premise-based telephony system will work better for them, and whether the benefits of open source outweigh the potential risks.

Digium CTO and Asterisk creator Mark Spencer called the proprietary hybrid-hosted model "very evil" during the Internet Telephony Expo West 2007 in Los Angeles, leading to a conversation-starting blog posting by SearchNetworking.com site editor Amy Kucharik. Kucharik recently spoke with Spencer to get some clarification on his position and controversial comments, and to hear his thoughts about open source VoIP and what it means for business users.

Nerd Vittles Leaves Trixbox and Annouces PBX-in-a-Flash

Note:  I have to agree about the direction of Trixbox cough cough Asterisk cough Platform.  It seems like they have lost touch with there roots.  Just because you purchase an open-source project does not mean you have some ownership of the underling code.  It belongs to the community as a whole and if anyone would have any rightful claim it would be our boy Marc Spencer.  So there, I said.  I have not really wanted to comment on this because A. there are some conflicting interests with my consulting services on the Asterisk iPBX and B. It is really a waste of my users and my own time.  But with our respected Ward Mundy making that comment I felt I need to be honest about my feelings on this subject.

We’ve been keeping a low profile for a few weeks, and now it’s time to let the cat out of the bag. As some of you know, we just haven’t been thrilled with the direction of the trixbox project lately. Without boring everyone with a lot of detail, suffice it to say that it’s just gotten a little too proprietary, too closed, and too commercial for our open source, puritanical tastes.

Marc Spencer & Asterisk PBX Moment

Note:  Okay, I hope you enjoyed my obligatory Marc Spencer picture.  I was reading Tristan Rhodes post about the current Asterisk product lineup and some of the recent developments.  I think Asterisk is heading in the right direction.

SwitchVox is a good step to compete directly with Shoretel and Trixtangle hehe.  I hope they keep decent margins in the formula to take care of there fiercely loyal Asterisk resellers and consultants.  The best thing that can happen is to have the margins left for the resellers so that keep a large volume of competent Asterisk installers that can support the product on a large scale.

I like where the Lumenvox's speech reconition product is going also.  Interactive voice application is already big and is only going to get bigger.

Digium Changes to Subscription Pricing for Telephony Product

I confess that years ago, I was one of those people who was skeptical and somewhat uncomprehending when Linux seller Red Hat changed its pricing to a subscription model, charging for software updates and support over a set period of time. Traditional software companies charge for a license to use a particular piece of technology, but that doesn't work as well in the open-source domain, where getting access to the software itself is easy and free.

As promised, here's a Q&A with the co-founder of Botanicalls, a not-yet-ready-for-primtime product that enables houseplants to call you on the phone when they need attention. Asterisk Release Maintenance News

Greetings Asterisk Enthusiasts,

Last week, about 50 developers gathered in Atlanta, GA, USA at the Georgia Tech University's Information Security Center (GTISC) for a week of discussion about the future of Asterisk. One of the topics that came up was the future of the existing Asterisk release branches. Asterisk 1.2 was released in the Fall of 2005. At this time, Asterisk 1.0 was put into security maintenance, meaning that it only received changes to fix security issues, and not changes intended to fix less severe issues.

Open-Source Telephony Goes Mainstream

Note:  Rich has post this great article on his blog about his trip to Digium's headquarters to meeting with Mark Spencer.

In the last few years the communications industry has been taken by storm through the invention of an open-source communications platform named Asterisk invented by Digium (www.digium.com) founder Mark Spencer. An article written for the January 2004 issue of Internet Telephony magazine by yours truly was titled, “Open Source Telephony. . . The Next Big Thing,” predicted open-source communications would become a huge phenomenon and it has perhaps exceeded everyone’s expectations of growth.

Asterisk PBX Project Security Advisory Process

Live from Etel - The Future of Asterisk

Note:  VoiP-News has a nice write from Mark Spencer's address to the E-Tel conference audience.

"We’re welcoming Mark Spencer, the “Father of Asterisk.”  In Japan, he says, it’s customary to begin with an apology.  He apologizes for the presentation graphics, and also for app_voicemail.  At the time he wrote it, it seemed like a simple concept, he says.  He also apologizes for app_queue/chan_agent."
